Sky Arts Invites The UK To Paint

Project: Remote delivery of social content and graphics into a live stream (UK)

Live Remote Production Workflows with Social and Graphics Integration 

Storyvault Films remotely produced Portrait Artist of the Week for Sky Arts during the Coronavirus crisis. Storyvault used Bee-On to integrate advanced graphics and audience-generated content into a Facebook Live stream.

The Challenge

During the UK’s self-isolation phase of social distancing, Sky Arts tasked Storyvault to produce a new and unique series streamed live on Facebook, following the ‘sip and draw’ sessions format so popular in social networks. 

Producers needed to moderate and deliver viewers’ Facebook messages directly into the livestream and ensure all visuals reflected Sky’s broadcast-standard graphics – all managed remotely and integrated via vMix’s cloud-based production tool.

How we did it
Our US and UK teams offered expanded support to planning and production. Training, social media integration, and delivery were all executed remotely for a relatively short turnaround. 

We built the graphics renderings following Sky’s design ideas, and worked on briefs to guarantee all formats were in position and with the right style and fonts – all on the cloud server and ready for feed integration.  

Working with a new production tool, we seamlessly integrated Bee-On directly into vMix and had Sky up and running in minutes. With graphic rendering ready, and production workflows in place, the newly trained production team was able to use Bee-On’s moderation to bring the content alive. 

During the live broadcast on Facebook, the team monitored, moderated, and pushed viewer’s comments into the prepared graphics and directly into the live feed, in real-time.

The results
The four-hour show allowed art fans to enjoy live Sky Arts programming and engage with an artist and its celebrity sitter, live on camera from their homes.

Viewers followed the creative process and painted along the artist during the show, shared their questions and comments over Facebook while the artist answered with hints and tips on how to create a perfect portrait.

Broadcast live at 10 AM each Sunday, Sky promoted the show via social channels and directed viewers to this live Facebook stream where they could send messages directly into the chat feed. Over the series, several artists and celebrity sitters join host Joan Bakewell to capture and paint a new portrait each week.

Aspiring artists also share their work on Instagram, and selected pieces will be featured in a highlights show broadcast on the Sky Arts channel at the end of the series.
